For three consecutive days, between 07-09.04.2025, due to the low temperatures in the gardens of Arsi Fruit, Parvomai village, Petrich municipality, ONDO’s Frost protection system has been automatically activated, protecting the plantation from frost.
ONDO’s timely intervention with this high-tech automated process which is starting just at the right time the sprinkler system built by Netafim to combat spring frosts prevented the loss of this year’s harvest on the farm.
The ONDO solution
ONDO Pro automation solution as well as an ONDO Sense weather station were installed in this garden three years ago in order to manage and optimize the irrigation process and reliable control of the built spring frost system through ONDO’s Frost protection functionality.
How is Frost protection activated?
When the temperature drops to 0 degrees and the weather forecast from the weather station installed in the plantation shows negative expected night temperatures, ONDO Pro turns on the pump of the overhead sprinkler system. The result of the drop in temperature is that the orchard becomes icy and thus protects the flowers from frost.
So how come, you might say…we freeze the trees and save them!!?
In fact, ice is an insulator and if the temperature outside is negative, then on the inside of the ice, where the flower buds are, the temperature is 2-3 degrees.
Cool, right 🙂 The freezing picture is actually a joy and hope for the owners of this orchard that the harvest is 80% saved.
